The helmet I got says fits "6 1/4 - 6 7/8." I googled Rawlings helmet size charts and it looks like this is an XS-S size (head circumference up to 20 cm). I'm wondering if there are several junior sizes in stock and you just randomly get one. Either way the one we got is tight on my small 7 year old. No way could it fit an average 8 or 9 year old. So I think you're taking a chance on what size actually shows up at your door.
As for the quality of the helmet, it has a lot of padding (see customer image). The pads over the ears have an almost paper-like edge to them that I have a feeling will rip over time. The other pads are fabric lined and seem much sturdier. I'm confident all the padding will provide great protection.
Overall it's a great helmet-much better than most I've come across in Little League. I just question the sizing. If Rawlings comes in a few different sizes, why don't you get a size choice?
I also want to mention the back of the helmet is all black (at least it is on the pink version).

Great helmet at an excellent price. I coached my son's t-ball team last spring and this helmet is far better than the helmets provided by the league. Excellent fit. Vents for cooling. Quicker drying padding inside than the basic foam often used. Meets official safety requirements. I bought my son his own helmet because I was thrilled he wanted to wear a helmet even when practicing in the backyard. A batting helmet is key safety equipment when kids swing baseball bats.
So, I love this helmet and so does my son .... BUT ... the color is not cardinal as pictured. It is quite purple. My son is OK with the color and did not want to go through the hassle, disappointment and delay of returning it for another. He had picked out a red helmet so he could put St. Louis Cardinals decals on it to make it official. Because the helmet and price are so great, I still give it 5 stars.

At first I thought it silly to buy our own batting helmet for little league, when the league supplied a number of them for the kids to share. Then after an outbreak of headlice happened in my son's school and league......I saw the sense in purchasing our own!
This helmet fits the bill quite well - without being too expensive. It has good ventilation, and fits securely and snugly.
